Tackle
As the Ba and Forsa are small rivers, a single handed fly rod approximately 10ft #7 weight is ideal.
A light double handed rod will also work if preferred to a single handed rod, and we have been using 11ft #7/8 switch rods very successfully with our anglers.
A floating line is ideal for most river conditions and on Loch Ba, but a sinking tip is useful to help take the fly down when there is a strong flow.
We often add a short fast sink poly leader to a floating line or use a heavy tube fly in these circumstances. A leader of 10lb nylon or other tippet material is ideal.
Depending on the prevailing conditions flies vary in size from size 6 to size 14 singles, doubles or tubes. The most common sizes are 8, 10 and 12 and the addition of some gold heads or heavy tubes can be useful in the fast or deep pools. Patterns including Willie Gunn, Cascade, Ali Shrimp, Stoat’s Tail, Collie Dog and Black/Red Francis are all proven favourites.
Clothing & Footwear
We would always advise bringing warm clothing, waterproofs and wellingtons with you.
Waders can prove helpful in some pools but are not essential. It is always useful to have a form of eye protection such as sunglasses.
